phoning home [RP for Lee]
standing in the elevator
After three hellish days in detox, Abby is finally feeling well enough, relatively speaking, to settle into a routine of sorts at the inpatient rehab center she's checked herself into. Throughout the detox process, throughout the tremors, nausea, debilitating headaches, and insomnia, all she's thought of (other than having a drink) is Lee and Lily. She's cried more than she'd ever admit, missing her husband and daughter and home almost to the point that she feels it physically. She almost regrets saying she needs to do this alone, but knows she'd never be able to do it if this wasn't her decision and hers alone.

But she still needs them. More than she's ever admitted to herself before. She takes a shower, subconsciously wanting to be fresh and clean for her first allowed phonecall after a successful completion of the detox process. She makes her way from her room to the main floor where she waits, impatiently, for her allotted time slot to begin.

When she finally gets on the phone, she freezes for a moment, her fingers forgetting what to do, what numbers to dial. When she shakes herself and dials the familiar numbers of Lee's phone, she can feel her heart banging around in her chest. What can he think of her now? Maybe he won't even want to talk to her. Maybe he's relieved to be rid of her and the mess she's made of her life. She wouldn't blame him, and she can feel her palms sweating as she listens to the phone ring.

I imagine so. He nods. She did say she thought it was something you'd want here. He's puzzled about that, knowing he hasn't even considered celebrating Christmas in this place.

She reaches for the package then, somewhat nervously. Should we see what it is, Lily?

He watches them, smiling at Lily's curiosity as she pats the gift wrapped object. I'm pretty sure it won't bite, whatever it is.

Well, no, I didn't think it would. She peels back a corner of the wrapping paper and lets Lily pull it so it rips.

He shrugs, he had noticed her nervousness about the gift in question, that's all. As the contents are revealed, he arches an eyebrow.

At first, she's not sure what she's looking at, but when the entire canvas is revealed she breaks into a grin. Lily...Did you help your Auntie La La with this?

La La git...She agrees, making her father laugh. Are those her feet?

Abby snorts with laughter at their daughter's expression, and runs a finger lightly over the canvas. They must be...What'd you do, Lily, walk through the paint? Bet you loved that, making a big mess...

Lee shrugs again. When she brought Lily home, she was paint free.

Must have had a bath then...She looks at Lee. So what's with the artistic Neela? You're not giving her enough work, she's taking up new hobbies?

He scratches the back of his neck, coughs. She's dating an artist.

Her eyebrows raise in surprise. She is? Who? Since when?

Lee has to actually think about it, and he still can't pin down specifics. Um...a while. I met him once. Seems nice. British guy.

She nods, an expectant look on her face. And....Does he have a name? Where'd she meet him?

He gives Abby a look like she's nuts. Do I look like one of her girlfriends to you? I don't know. Blane, Blake...Bob...something.
