I need help [RP for Lee] (spoilers for tonight's ER)
standing in the elevator
lockhart_md
After a strangely jarring conversation with the new hospital chaplain, Abby finds herself taking the elevator upstairs, to the surgical department. Making her way to her husband's office, she waffles outside the door, pacing, stalling.

It's not until she sees one of the surgical nurses casting a curious look in her direction that she knocks softly on the door, then pushes it open. She takes a deep breath, running her fingers through her hair, and lets the door close behind her as she steps into Lee's office.

She begins to speak but has to clear her throat before she tries again.
Hey...how's the leg feeling? She approaches her husband slowly, gesturing to his injured leg.

She gives him the address and general directions as she fastens her seatbelt, unable to look at him.

He closes his eyes and inhales deeply, calming himself over the anxiety he feels about the drive, about having to say good bye to her shortly. Finally looking over at her again he realizes she's averted her gaze. You're doing the right thing.

She looks at him finally, taking a breath. I hope so.

He was going to back out of the driveway but her words cause him to stop and sit staring at her. Do you want to do this?

She stares back at him. Want? I need to do this.

Yes you do. He agrees with her, ignoring the look she's giving him. And like you've told me repeatedly, it won't do a damned bit of good unless you *want* to do this.

She sighs. I want to get better, Lee. I do.

Then why don't you know if you're doing the right thing by ...He doesn't want to say the words and they stick in his throat at first, By going to a rehab facility?

She takes a deep breath and lets it out, being completely, utterly honest with him for the first time in what seems like a long time. What if it doesn't work? What if I...can't do it?

He starts to tell her that she can do it, will do it, but he has his doubts too. He unfastens his seatbelt so he can move easily, turning to face her as he smooths a hand over her hair. If it doesn't work...you try something else. But you can't go in there expecting to fail or you will. And I don't think you want to do that.

I'm not expecting to fail. It's the truth, but she also can't help but think about her current failure. She's been in rehab before. And now she's going back. She's already failed.

He watches her and wonders how many more times they'll do this. He's not ignorant to the way addiction and rehab tend to be cyclical, but he's never given it much thought within the context of his personal life. Is she always going to fall this hard and fast or will she simply stumble on occasion? And is he going to be able to cope with it? Then you won't.

She doesn't want to try to figure out if he's being sincere, or if he just wants her to feel better, so she just nods. Thank you.

He nods in response as he turns back around in his seat. Fastening his seatbelt again, he looks at Lily in the rear view mirror. Ready to go bye bye, Lily?

She turns to smile at the little girl as she parrots her father's "bye bye" in the midst of other happy babbling.

He smiles slightly as he listens to Lily. Well, at least someone's happy. He makes the comment quietly as he backs the car out of the driveway and heads towards their destination.

She clears her throat, awkwardly. Um...I just bought more diapers, so you should be set for a while with that... She wants to go on, wants to tell him to remember this and don't forget that, but she knows he knows their daughter's routine as well as she does. She's been wanting Make Way for Ducklings for her story lately...

He lets her talk, not bothering to tell her that he knows this, and that he's capable of buying more diapers should the need arise. Read it twice, right?

She nods. At least. Last night we had to read it four times.

He gives her a sideways glance at that one. Four?

She shrugs a shoulder. It's not a *long* book.

I know that. He shakes his head. I understand the benefits of repetition but really...

Had to get her drowsy somehow. She admits.

Turn the lights down, rock her, talk quietly...He offers his own method for getting the baby to sleep.
