I need help [RP for Lee] (spoilers for tonight's ER)
standing in the elevator
lockhart_md
After a strangely jarring conversation with the new hospital chaplain, Abby finds herself taking the elevator upstairs, to the surgical department. Making her way to her husband's office, she waffles outside the door, pacing, stalling.

It's not until she sees one of the surgical nurses casting a curious look in her direction that she knocks softly on the door, then pushes it open. She takes a deep breath, running her fingers through her hair, and lets the door close behind her as she steps into Lee's office.

She begins to speak but has to clear her throat before she tries again.
Hey...how's the leg feeling? She approaches her husband slowly, gesturing to his injured leg.

He doesn't say anything at first, a bit surprised that she's not actually stalling. Well, okay then. He stops at the hall closet for his coat, then holds hers out to her as well. Let me take her for a minute.

She hesitates in handing over the little girl. It's okay, I've got her.

You're going to put on your coat while holding her? He looks at her oddly but doesn't argue about it.

She looks at him blankly for a moment, as if putting on her coat hadn't occured to her, then hands him the baby as she reaches for her coat.

Once again it hits him just how unlike herself his wife is currently. He takes the baby from her as he hands over the coat, giving Lily a loud kiss on the cheek as he snuggles her close. We're going to go bye bye, Lily. You want to go for a ride with Mommy and Daddy? Can you say bye bye?

Bye bye! Lily parrots happily, waving her hand. Abby puts on her coat and smiles weakly at the baby.

That's right. He encourages their daughter, always happy to hear her speaking actual words instead of gibberish. As soon as Mommy's got her coat on, we'll go bye bye.

Abby zips up her coat as Lily keeps sing-songing the words, happy with the approval from her father.

He presses a kiss against Lily's curls, smiling softly at her behavior though the knowledge that she doesn't understand any of this is making him sad. He's not looking forward to being on his own with the little girl again, not because he isn't capable but because he knows Lily's going to be confused and looking for her mother.

Abby's thoughts are similar to Lee's as she watches their daughter with him. She gives them a small smile and speaks softly. Let's get this over with...

He nods as he moves towards the front door with Lily. All right.

She follows him to the front door, her hand on Lily's back, wanting to stay connected to the little girl as long as she can.

He can't ignore how close she's hovering and giving her a sympathetic look his head at Lily. Do you want to take her? I'll lock the door.

She nods, holding her hands out for the little girl. C'mere, Lilybug.

He settles the child in Abby's arms then turns to pull the door closed behind them and lock it.

She rubs her nose against Lily's. Ooh, it's cold out here, isn't it baby?

He nods, pulling his coat closed as he shivers. It's going to get colder tonight. At least it's not snowing.

She holds Lily tighter. Guess you'll wear your fleece jammies tonight, right Lily?

Of course she will. He places a hand on Abby's back as they walk to the car. Daddy probably will too.

That makes three of us. She comments absently, thinking of the warm pajamas he'd suggested she pack.

He refuses to think about the fact that they'll be in separate beds tonight. Instead, he unlocks the car's door and holds open the rear passenger door so she can put the baby in the car.

She slips into the car and gets Lily situated in her carseat. She kisses the little girl and gives her a board book to handle before closing the door and moving to the front seat.

He's all ready in the car by the time she gets in, engine running as he waits for the car to warm up. Ah...where exactly is this place?

She gives him the address and general directions as she fastens her seatbelt, unable to look at him.

He closes his eyes and inhales deeply, calming himself over the anxiety he feels about the drive, about having to say good bye to her shortly. Finally looking over at her again he realizes she's averted her gaze. You're doing the right thing.
