I need help [RP for Lee] (spoilers for tonight's ER)
standing in the elevator
After a strangely jarring conversation with the new hospital chaplain, Abby finds herself taking the elevator upstairs, to the surgical department. Making her way to her husband's office, she waffles outside the door, pacing, stalling.

It's not until she sees one of the surgical nurses casting a curious look in her direction that she knocks softly on the door, then pushes it open. She takes a deep breath, running her fingers through her hair, and lets the door close behind her as she steps into Lee's office.

She begins to speak but has to clear her throat before she tries again.
Hey...how's the leg feeling? She approaches her husband slowly, gesturing to his injured leg.

He reaches for his own towel and follows her out of the shower.

She finishes drying her body off, then brings the towel to her hair, rubbing the excess water out as she walks back into their bedroom.

He doesn't bother to dry off properly, just wraps the towel around his waist. Do you want me to call the sitter and have her bring Lily home?

She nods, pausing in pulling her jeans up, stomach clenching as she thinks about leaving her little girl again. Yeah...Yeah. I want to see her before...

He nods before she finishes the sentence, reaching for the phone as he heads towards his dresser for something to wear.

She purses her lips together, running her hand over a framed picture of Lily on her dresser.

He keeps the phone call short as he asks the sitter to bring Lily back to the house early since he and Abby are home. After hanging up he pats her back gently and gets dressed himself, pulling on jeans and a sweater.

She pulls on a sweater as well as her jeans, and returns to the bathroom to run a comb through her hair and brush her teeth. She's moving methodically, not wanting to think about what comes next.

He lets her get dressed and putter around in the bathroom, giving her some space not that he feels any better about their impending departure. He sits on the bed to put on his socks and shoes, trying to ignore the sinking feeling in his stomach.

Coming back out into the bedroom, she watches him for several moments before going to sit beside him on the edge of the bed.

He looks over at her as she sits down, rests a hand on her thigh.

She leans into him lightly when he touches her.

I'm sorry...He's not sure if he's apologizing for his reluctance or the fact that he'd been so oblivious to how serious things had gotten. Maybe both.

You don't have anything to be sorry for. She protests. This is my fault.

He shakes his head. I'm sorry I didn't know.

I'm good at hiding it. She reminds him, not proud of that fact.

He nods, hating the truth in her statement. I wish you wouldn't do that. Hide from me.

I know. She doesn't have an explanation or excuse, not a satisfactory one.

I wouldn't have been mad at you. He assumes that's why she keeps things from him.

She shakes her head. I know, that's not...She thought she could handle it this time, didn't want him to see her so weak if she couldn't.

He doesn't feel any better about things, she's only confirming the fact that she never wants his help, doesn't need him for anything. Do you understand that I love you? Really love you.

She pulls back slightly to look at him. Of course I do.

He wants to believe that, he really wants to think that she knows how much he cares for her. Then why can't you come to me with things? He shakes his head, knowing he won't get an answer about anything now. I'm going to take your bag down and put it in the car.

She presses her lips together, knowing he's upset with her but not knowing how to fix things. Okay...

He gives her thigh a squeeze before getting up and grabbing her bag off the floor. He refuses to let things be unpleasant between them before she leaves, knowing it will only make the separation more unbearable.

Taking the bag downstairs and then to the car, he lingers outside longer than need be. He can't believe this is what things have come to, that she's really this bad off. That he didn't know she was this bad. How could he be so stupid?
